Fear Replaces Faith: Leaders Condemn Attacks During Easter Period

Christian leaders in Northern Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Northern Christian Association, have condemned the persistent attacks across the region, warning that the violence is overshadowing the Easter season.

The leaders expressed concern over recent attacks in Jos, Plateau State, and parts of Kaduna State, particularly those that occurred on Palm Sunday, where several innocent lives were lost. They noted that the incidents have left many families grieving and displaced at a time meant for spiritual reflection and celebration.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the association, Reverend Joseph John Hayab, and the Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, the group lamented that instead of joy and peace, many communities are experiencing fear, sorrow, and uncertainty.

They stressed that the situation is not limited to Plateau State, pointing out that insecurity has continued to affect several parts of Northern Nigeria, with recurring cases of killings, abductions, and displacement.

The leaders warned that the repeated occurrence of such attacks during Christian holy periods raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures and the ability of authorities to protect citizens.

They further cautioned that the continued violence could lead to its normalisation, deepen the suffering of affected communities, and weaken public confidence in the government’s capacity to ensure safety.

The group called on the Federal Government and security agencies to move beyond routine condemnations and take decisive, sustained action to end the cycle of violence and bring perpetrators to justice.

They also urged religious, traditional, and community leaders to promote unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, emphasising that tackling insecurity requires collective effort.

Despite the challenges, they encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in faith, noting that Easter remains a symbol of hope, renewal, and victory.
