Death of Four Female Elected Officers in Lagos Raises Alarms
Within a short period since their inauguration, four female elected officers in Lagos State have passed away—sparking concern and debate.

Just 57 days ago, newly elected council chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors were sworn in across Lagos. Sadly, four women from that cohort have since died under different circumstances:
- Oluwakemi Rufai – Councillor for Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki. Died on August 13, 2025, just 17 days after the inauguration. She was the only woman in her legislative council.
- Zainab Shotayo – Councillor for Ward C3, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, who also served as Chief Whip. Died on August 18, 2025, 22 days post‐inauguration, after a brief illness.
- Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose – Vice Chairman, Badagry West LCDA. Passed on September 20, 2025, 55 days after taking office. She was daughter of Oba Oyekan Possi Ajose, the Alapa of Apa Egun-Awori Kingdom.
- Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan – Councillor of Ward F, Shomolu. Died on September 21, 2025, 56 days after inauguration.
The Lagos State chapter of the APC has dismissed suggestions that politics played a role in these tragedies, calling such insinuations unfounded and insensitive. A spokesperson urged the public to avoid speculation, emphasizing that the party has always supported women’s participation in politics.
