Niger Assembly Seeks Ban on ‘Sign-Out’ Celebrations Over Misconduct Concerns

The Niger State House of Assembly has urged Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning “Marker’s Day” and “Sign-Out” celebrations in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.

The call followed a motion by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, member representing Tafa constituency, who expressed concern over the rise in unruly behaviour, misconduct, and immoral activities during such events.

Originally intended to mark the end of school sessions for graduating students, Hon. Idris argued that the sign-out tradition has been tainted by disturbing incidents, threatening the values and standards of the state’s education system.

The motion received unanimous backing from lawmakers, who agreed that growing public concern required urgent intervention. Presiding over the session, Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Dauda pledged to work with the state governor and the Ministry of Education to ensure swift implementation of the proposed ban.
