Michelle Obama: “I’m So Glad I Never Had a Son”
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has shared that she has no regrets about not having a son — and is “so glad” she didn’t. Jokingly, she said any son of hers would have been a miniature version of her husband, former President Barack Obama.

Obama made the remark during the latest episode of Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, released Wednesday, where she was joined by her brother, Craig Robinson, and radio host Angie Martinez.
The conversation turned to masculinity and the challenges of raising boys and young men. When Martinez teased, “You should’ve thrown a boy in the mix,” Obama replied with a laugh, “I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy. Because he would’ve been a Barack Obama.”
Martinez playfully suggested, “Baby Barack — it would’ve been amazing!” But Michelle disagreed, saying with a grin, “Ooh, no. I would’ve felt for him,” hinting at how hard it might have been to live up to the expectations of being a mini Barack.
Her brother noted that Michelle had “borrowed” his sons over the years. “I got plenty,” she agreed.
Michelle and Barack Obama, married since 1992, are parents to two daughters: Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24. Reflecting on motherhood, Michelle said, “I’ve loved every phase of parenting: when they were babies, when they started to talk, even the teenage years in the White House.”
She added, “I love watching them become their own people, make their own choices, figure stuff out — and then call me after they figure stuff out.”
The lighthearted episode offered a warm glimpse into Obama’s thoughts on family, blending humor with genuine appreciation for her daughters.
