Chronicle Magazine to Posthumously Honor Chief Adefemi Adekanye with Timeless Legend Award
The Chronicle Magazine is set to honor the late Chief Adefemi Adekanye with the prestigious Timeless Legend Award during the 2025 Fizzy Lecture and Award ceremony. The event is scheduled for Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 3 PM at the OSDPC Multipurpose Hall in Ijapo Estate, Akure, Ondo State.
This year’s lecture, themed “Curtailing the Mystery of Ritual Killings and Cyber Crimes: A Critical Analysis in Nigeria Perception,” will feature insights from Dr. Gbenga Abimbola of the Mass Communication Department at AAU Akungba.
Chief Adefemi Adekanye, born on August 8, 1944, in Akeju’s Village, Oyo State, was a renowned town planner and a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP). He held various leadership positions, including Chairman of the NITP Oyo State Chapter and National President of NITP. He was also a member of international planning organizations such as the American Society of Planning Officials (ASPO) and the American Planning Association (APA).
Beyond his professional achievements, Chief Adekanye was a distinguished philanthropist and devout Christian, notable for his generous contributions to his church. He was a successful businessman, establishing ventures like Edoson (Nig.) Ltd., Layo-Ade Wood Products Ltd., and Layo-Ade Petroleum Products Ltd. He also held chieftaincy titles of Majeobaje of Akureland and Mayegun Odoo of Ishare Group, and received numerous awards, including the Ondo State Merit Award and the Best Family of The Year Award alongside his amiable wife, Erelu Mercy Funmilayo Adekanye.
The event will be chaired by Hon. (Dr.) Gbenga Fasua, Chairman of Akure Local Government, with His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, Governor of Ondo State, as the Special Guest of Honour. They, along with other dignitaries, will celebrate Chief Adekanye’s enduring legacy and contributions.
Chief Adefemi Adekanye was an influential figure in Nigerian politics, particularly within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where he played a pivotal role in its development in Ondo State. His efforts and support for the party were crucial in its early successes, including the victory in 2003.
The Chronicle Magazine’s Timeless Legend Award is a testament to Chief Adekanye’s lasting impact on society, ensuring that his legacy of excellence and service will be remembered for generations to come.
It would be recalled that Chief Adefemi Adekanye died on the 26th of February 2021 and was laid to rest on the 31st of April, 2021.
