Ondo Assembly Re-summons Commissioner for Finance

By Awodeyi Elizabeth

Ondo State House of Assembly has re-summoned the State Commissioner for Finance, Mrs Omowumi Isaac, to appear before on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

The House while expressing its displeasure regarding the absence of the Commissioner, emphasised that it is her primary duty to explain in detail the 2024 budget performance and the proposed re-ordering of the budget before the House could commence work on the bill.

It should be recalled that at a plenary on Tuesday, the House invited the Commissioner to appear before it today and shed light on the proposed bill to amend the 2024 appropriation and authorise the issue from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of Ondo State by the State Government, as read by the Clerk of the House, Jaiyeola Benjamin.

At the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji, the Clerk of the House, Jaiyeola Benjamin, read a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr A.O. Akinseloyin, stating that the Commissioner is on official assignment outside the State.

However, the House, during a debate, affirmed that the letter written by the House was directed to the Commissioner and not the PS, observing that it was an affront to the House and the entire people of the State.

The House resolved that the bill should be stepped down until the appearance of the Commissioner.

Subsequently, a bill for a law to amend the establishment of the Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) and to make provisions for the composition of the Commission and for ancillary matters was committed to the House Committee on OSOPADEC after scaling through the second reading.

While speaking under a matter of urgent public importance regarding the robbery and incessant killings in Owo town, the House directed the House Committee on Security to visit the area and report back to the House as soon as possible.

The House equally charged all security operatives to be alive to their duties and to re-strategise to curtail the activities of criminals.

While calling on the people of Owo Local Government to be vigilant and report all suspected activities, the House stated that security issues would not be taken for granted.

Earlier, the lawmaker representing Owo Constituency 1, who is also the Majority Leader, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, raised concerns about the menace and stressed the need to strengthen security in the area.
