From institutional reforms and technological innovation to youth employment, empowerment and strategic political mobilisation, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo is emerging as a prominent figure in the Tinubu administration and a major political force in the South-West.

At a time when Nigerians are demanding purposeful leadership, improved public services, employment opportunities and accountable governance, the performance of public office holders is increasingly being measured by their ability to deliver tangible results.
Among those attracting considerable attention is the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose stewardship of the ministry has placed him among the prominent members of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet.
Since his appointment on August 16, 2023, Tunji-Ojo has pursued an ambitious reform agenda focused on technological advancement, institutional restructuring, improved service delivery, personnel welfare and national security.
Beyond his ministerial responsibilities, his growing influence in youth empowerment and grassroots political mobilisation has strengthened his relevance, particularly in Ondo State and the wider South-West, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
For many of his supporters, he represents a new generation of leadership driven by innovation, administrative experience and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.
TRANSFORMING THE MINISTRY OF INTERIOR
The Ministry of Interior supervises four critical agencies: the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Federal Fire Service.
Upon assuming office, Tunji-Ojo prioritised addressing longstanding challenges, including passport application delays, correctional facility overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure and inefficient administrative processes.
One of his most visible achievements has been the clearance of more than 200,000 outstanding passport applications within weeks of taking office.
He subsequently introduced reforms aimed at digitalising passport administration, including contactless biometric capture, online renewal services and passport home delivery.
The expansion of electronic passport facilities at selected Nigerian diplomatic missions in Europe, including Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria and Switzerland, has also improved access for Nigerians in the diaspora.
Other initiatives include electronic immigration gates at Nigeria’s five international airports and the digitalisation of expatriate quota and residence permit processes.
These reforms have helped reposition immigration administration towards a more technology-driven system.
BATTIC: TECHNOLOGY AT THE CENTRE OF REFORM
A major demonstration of the minister’s technological vision is the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC), commissioned on December 11, 2024.
The facility houses the Nigeria Immigration Service Command and Control Centre, ECOWAS Biometric Card Production Centre, Interior Data Centre, Visa Application Centre and a solar power facility.
The complex is designed to strengthen immigration intelligence, improve data management and enhance border security.
The reported 1.4-petabyte-capacity data centre at the NIS headquarters in Abuja further demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to modernising immigration operations.
The deployment of additional patrol vehicles and the activation of Document Verification Officers across local government areas have also strengthened operational efficiency.
CORRECTIONAL REFORMS: RESTORING DIGNITY AND PROVIDING SECOND CHANCES
Another important aspect of Tunji-Ojo’s ministerial record is his intervention in Nigeria’s correctional system.
His administration mobilised more than ₦600 million through partnerships and stakeholder coordination to pay fines for over 4,000 inmates held for minor offences.
The initiative helped secure their release and contributed to efforts to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities.
The ministry has also upgraded more than ten custodial centres, increased inmates’ feeding allocation by 100 per cent and introduced biometric systems for improved inmate management.
Healthcare delivery has received attention through approvals for the recruitment of 100 nurses and 50 doctors, alongside the deployment of NYSC medical personnel.
Through collaboration with the National Open University of Nigeria, inmates have also gained opportunities to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Vocational training and production facilities are being promoted to equip inmates with practical skills that can support their reintegration into society.
These initiatives reflect an approach that views correctional institutions not merely as places of confinement but also as centres for rehabilitation and personal development.
STRENGTHENING SECURITY AND PERSONNEL WELFARE
Tunji-Ojo has also focused on strengthening the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, particularly in protecting critical national infrastructure against pipeline vandalism, illegal mining and economic sabotage.
The Federal Fire Service has similarly received attention through efforts to improve emergency response capacity and public safety.
Personnel welfare has also been a major priority.
The minister approved and implemented promotions affecting more than 32,000 paramilitary officers across the ministry’s agencies, addressing longstanding concerns about career progression.
The intervention has been regarded as an important step towards improving morale, motivation and institutional effectiveness.
YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND EMPOWERMENT: CREATING OPPORTUNITIES
Beyond his ministerial achievements, Tunji-Ojo has attracted attention for his commitment to youth employment, empowerment and economic inclusion.
At a time when unemployment remains one of the major concerns confronting Nigerian youths, his supporters point to his employment and empowerment interventions as part of his contribution to improving the lives of young people.
Through various employment opportunities, professional networks and empowerment initiatives associated with his activities, numerous youths have reportedly benefited from opportunities for economic advancement.
His interventions, particularly in Ondo State, have strengthened his relationship with young people who see him as a leader willing to extend opportunities beyond political appointments.
His own professional background also provides an important dimension to his interest in technology, entrepreneurship and employment creation.
Before entering politics, he established himself in the information technology sector, becoming Chief Executive Officer of Matrix IT Solutions Limited at the age of 24.
His experience in business and technology has influenced his approach to public administration, with emphasis on innovation, productivity and professional development.
For many young Nigerians, his journey demonstrates the importance of giving the younger generation opportunities to participate meaningfully in governance and nation-building.
TUNJI-OJO AND TINUBU’S 2027 RE-ELECTION: BUILDING A STRONG GRASSROOTS POLITICAL STRUCTURE
Beyond his administrative responsibilities, Tunji-Ojo has emerged as an influential figure in political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.
As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares for another presidential contest, consolidating support across the South-West will remain an important political consideration.
In this regard, Tunji-Ojo’s growing influence in Ondo State and his association with several pro-Tinubu mobilisation platforms have positioned him as an important figure in the President’s re-election project.
He has been associated with the Asiwaju Mandate Group (AMG), BTO4PBAT and the BTO–Unit to Unit for Tinubu’s Re-election movement.
These platforms are designed to strengthen grassroots political engagement, mobilise supporters and promote the President’s second-term ambition.
One significant feature of the mobilisation strategy is its reported spread across Ondo State’s 18 local government areas, 203 political wards and 3,933 polling units.
This unit-to-unit approach is particularly important because it takes political mobilisation closer to voters and communities rather than depending exclusively on prominent political figures.
WOMEN AND YOUTHS AT THE CENTRE OF MOBILISATION
Tunji-Ojo’s political network has also placed considerable emphasis on women and young people.
Through the women’s wing of the Asiwaju Mandate Group, supporters have outlined an ambitious target of securing up to 95 per cent support among female voters in Ondo State for President Tinubu.
Youth and student mobilisation structures have similarly been promoted to expand the President’s support base among younger Nigerians.
This strategy recognises the importance of women and youths in political organisation, communication and electoral participation.
The Jingi Asiwaju Free Medical Outreach, associated with his political network, has also provided healthcare interventions across Ondo State’s three senatorial districts.
Such community-based initiatives combine humanitarian support with grassroots engagement, helping to maintain contact with residents and address some of their immediate needs.
DEFENDING TINUBU’S REFORMS
Tunji-Ojo has also become one of the administration’s vocal defenders of President Tinubu’s economic policies.
At the 2026 National Summit of Former Legislators in Abuja, he defended major economic decisions, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms.
He argued that the policies were necessary for the country’s long-term economic restructuring and urged Nigerians to support continuity beyond 2027.
His role in communicating the administration’s policies and defending its reform agenda adds another dimension to his political relevance.
WHY HE MATTERS TO TINUBU’S 2027 AMBITION
Tunji-Ojo’s importance to the President’s re-election project rests on several factors: his political influence in Ondo State, grassroots mobilisation structures, appeal among young people, engagement with women and community leaders, and visibility as a serving minister.
His administrative achievements also provide material for communicating the Tinubu government’s reform agenda to voters.
For the President’s political camp, individuals who can combine effective political organisation with community engagement and youth mobilisation could play important roles in securing electoral support.
Tunji-Ojo’s supporters believe his growing network and political experience position him to make a significant contribution to the 2027 campaign, particularly in the South-West.
FROM THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FEDERAL CABINET
Tunji-Ojo’s journey into national leadership began in the private sector, where he built a career in information technology and business management.
He became the Chief Executive Officer of Matrix IT Solutions Limited at the age of 24 and holds professional certifications in ethical hacking, CompTIA Network+ and hardware management.
He entered the National Assembly in 2019, representing Akoko North-East/Akoko North-West Federal Constituency of Ondo State.
He was re-elected in 2023 and served as Chairman of the House Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission.
Following his appointment as Minister of Interior in August 2023, he resigned his membership of the House of Representatives.
His professional and political journey has given him experience across the private sector, legislature and executive arm of government.
He has also received several recognitions, including the National Assembly Best Legislator of the Year awards in 2020 and 2021, alongside recognition among the 30 most influential young Nigerians by the National Youth Council of Nigeria in 2019.
ONDO STATE AND THE FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP
Tunji-Ojo’s growing national profile has naturally generated discussions about his potential contribution to the future development of Ondo State.
His supporters believe his exposure to national governance, administrative experience and political connections could be valuable in addressing the state’s development challenges.
Ondo State possesses significant opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, tourism, education and industrial development.
Unlocking these opportunities requires strategic leadership, investment, employment creation and effective governance.
For many of his admirers, Tunji-Ojo represents a generation of leaders with the experience and ambition to contribute meaningfully to these objectives.
A REFORMER, EMPLOYMENT ADVOCATE AND STRATEGIC POLITICAL ASSET
Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s emergence as Minister of Interior has strengthened the conversation about youth leadership and public sector transformation in Nigeria.
His administration has been associated with significant developments in immigration services, technological innovation, correctional rehabilitation, personnel welfare and national security infrastructure.
Beyond government, his reported employment and empowerment interventions have strengthened his appeal among young people, while his grassroots political structures have increased his relevance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
For President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Tunji-Ojo represents a potentially important political asset, combining ministerial visibility, youth engagement, grassroots organisation and regional influence.
His journey from the private sector to the National Assembly and Federal Executive Council also demonstrates the growing role of a new generation in Nigeria’s leadership structure.
Ultimately, his legacy will be measured by the institutions he strengthens, the opportunities he creates, the people whose lives he improves and the lasting impact of his public service.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo remains a prominent figure whose ministerial performance, youth-focused interventions and political influence will continue to attract national attention.
