Nigerian disc jockey and music personality, Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has explained why she decided to move away from her trademark pink fashion style, which had become a defining feature of her public image for several years.
The entertainer said her decision was influenced by personal growth and the desire to express herself freely without being associated with a particular colour.
Cuppy explained that although pink played an important role in shaping her identity, she no longer wanted her fashion choices to be restricted by the colour.
She made the clarification during an interview with GQ Poland, excerpts of which were shared on X on Friday.
According to the DJ, pink represented important aspects of her personality, including confidence, power, vibrancy, self-expression and the courage to stand out.
However, she noted that those qualities could still be communicated through different colours.
She said, “I was known for the colour pink and it was my identity for so many years, and a lot of people are asking what happened to the pink.
“I want people to understand that actually growth is something that will always come, and I don’t think I should be boxed into a colour.
“Pink for me meant power, vibrancy, expression, unapologeticness, positionality, and that’s still me, but I’m able to express it through other colours as well.”
Cuppy also linked her fashion evolution to her experiences as a woman who has spent years building a career in the male-dominated entertainment industry.
Reflecting on her early days in the music business, she recalled adopting pink as a way of expressing her femininity while establishing her professional identity.
She explained that when she began her journey in the entertainment industry approximately 17 years ago, the colour helped her maintain her individuality and confidence in an environment where women often had to work harder to establish themselves.
“When I think about my style, I think about a woman in a male-dominated industry.
“Maybe also when I first started 17 years ago, a young girl that was using pink to represent her femininity and stay in the room,” she stated.
The disc jockey further explained that her years of experience in the industry had given her the confidence to express her femininity without depending on a particular colour or fashion identity.
According to her, having overcome several professional challenges and established herself in the entertainment sector, she now feels comfortable exploring different colours and styles.
“Now that I’ve been through a lot of doors and kicked down some windows, I feel like I can represent my femininity through any colour.
“So my style I would say is vibrant, grounded and ethnical,” she added.
DJ Cuppy’s comments suggest that her decision to move away from her signature pink appearance is not a rejection of the colour but an expression of personal development, creative freedom and a broader understanding of her identity.
Her evolving fashion choices reflect her belief that individuals should be allowed to grow and redefine themselves without being permanently confined to the image or identity they once created.
